the car has 250000km on it and I'm getting noise from the timing chain area I think. Is it wise to try and change the tensioner or is just make more sense to change the chain?
170.000 miles the car is due for a new chain and tensioner, if it is the original it effects the timing to a small degree when worn.
you can do a check by lifting the rocker cover, take the sparking plugs out, turn the engine clockwise to get the TDC mark up in line with the mark on the pulley, if you over shoot, wind the engine back a quarter of a turn and wind slowly to the mark. At this point the marks on the camshaft sprocket should be inline, if the marks do not line up, and the camshaft needs to turn a little more, then the chain needs replacing, you can double check and turn the cam shaft so that the marks do line up and see how much slack you have on the right hand side, there should not be any.
