My 2001 E200 headlight beam falls just a few meters from the front of the car when dipped. The High light is not much better. There is a rotary button on the dashboard which seems to be for raising and dipping the lights. It has 4 positions (0,1,2,3 and 4). I have rotated it with no visible effect on the position of the beam. I notice that in the manual (which unfortunately for me is in German)under the explanation for this switch the word 'xenonkoplampen' appears. Whatever it means my lights are not xenon lights. Can I raise the beam from the hood like other cars? Could it be that my car can take xenon bulbs? Can a car take both xenon and ordinary bulbs without a major adaptation?

that button is for use when towing heavy trailers or caravans or for a full load of large.. people in the car

normally it should remain in position 0 but pos 4 when carrying a heavy load

if it doesnt make any difference to the beam whatsoever (park infront of a wall about 2 metres back and test at night) then the vacuum pipes are loose or malfunctioning,

i suspect that they are malfunctioning which would possibly explain your current low dip (probably stuck at 4)

cheers

Check the vacuum connections to the rear of the headlamps. There are two stiff pipes to the nearside lamp, and one on the offside lamp (runs back to the nearside lamp). IIRC one is violet, the other is gray.

Be careful, the connections are very tight, and I imagine are easy to break.

Also check the back of the rotary switch on the dash to make sure the pipes are secure there.
