I have an E200 Kompressor Auto. When I touch the accelerator there is an unusual engine noise (sort of a grating sound) at about 1500 revs. The noise stops below and above this rev level.

A friend thought it might be a problem with a camshaft.
Any thoughts or inputs ?

Thanks,
PS

Thanks for the input. Sure sounds like the noise is coming from at/near the top right hand side of the engine block. Will check out your suggestions though. Thanks.

Have a look at the fanbelt tensioner assembly. There is a little shock absorber in there, which when worn causes the same symptoms you describe. as its not doing its job of damping the tensioner arrangement.

Kinda sounds like a diesely rattly metallic noise, just above tickover yes?

I believe the part is about £35 and about and less than an hour to fit.

Spike,

Thanks. You might be correct. It absolutely sounds like a diesely, metallic noise and it happens right when you move up the revs from ticking over. The sounds recurs on the way back down to ticking-over also.

Will check out.

Thanks again. Pat.

nosey komp

Hi

Could be inlet cam adjuster, this is very common. To confirm remove the plastic cover that covers the water pump and bits at the front. you will see a round metal cap about 6cm in diameter that is at the end of the inlet camshaft, remove the electrical plug and then see if you can still reproduce the noise if all is quite you need to replace the spocket and spring,

this part has been modified so make sure you get the new part number

Had a problem with a clk 230 it was the exhaust bracket at the gearbox that was split. It sounded a top end rattle from the engine at different revs have a look before you start stripping things down it had only done 28,000 miles.

piestore, your're correct !

Local MB dealer confirmed it is the inlet cam adjuster. Thanks much.
