i need to change the catalytic of my car i was quoted £1100.00,has anyone encountered this problem and can anyone suggest me about aftermarket cats please thanks

I recently had a new cat . cost £750 on E 300 1998, Ask for credit on the scrap though . I did not and found out they could be worth upm to £200. See other thread about scrap cats.

You can buy generic catalysts on ebay based on engine size which can often be fitted to cars with minimal modification to the other exhaust pipes and cost < £100 new.

Guess it won't be original manufacturers spec and haven't any experience with this on Mercs but did it on my old rover and it worked perfectly, no rattles and passed the emissions test. Might be worth it, particularly if car isnt worth a great deal.

Problem is some of these non genuine cats only work if they are really hot and can fail the MOT because they dont get hot enough on tick over before the MOT.

before you condem the cat get the lambda probe (oxygen sensor tested/replaced as that is the real component that stops excess fuelling of the engine.

for a properly tuned engine you could leave the cat off and still pass the emissions test (as some people indeed do).
