Hi
I recently bought a E220 CDI break (2001 model). It has 125.000 km.
After driving only 50 kms, suddenly beeping occured and a message appeared (i do not remember the exact wording but it was somehing like 'power control'). Then the 4 lights started to flash and i was advised to stop the engine.

So i did and now it won't start again. Whenever i try to start, the 4 lights start to blink.

I looked into the service booklet and called the MB garage to know the history of the car. They said an ignector has been changed 2 months ago and that the mile-counter has been changed also, however while keeping the original mileage.
When i look into the booklet into more detail, i found out that the small pages with 'ASSYST' were glued into the booklet. So this could be a setup ?

My questions therefore are : Can a MB garage afford itself to get involved into fraud ?
Is there any way the mileage can be verified apart from the service booklet ?
And of course the most impotant question : what could possibly be the reason for the car refusing service suddenly

I am a MB owner for 2 weeks now, hope not to regret it ... (have driven audi A6 for 10 years without single problem)
:(

Hi,
1) get the car to the garage and have the problem checked. It could be anything at this stage and possibly not anything serious.

2) No - if the laws where you are are as heavy on these things as they are in the UK, then a dealer can't afford that sort of trouble, and they don't need to. Get them to produce the service history from their computer system. It should tie up.

A 2001 E break (Estate) has the old VDO dash with the square computer read out. These are notorious for pixelating so may be the reason it was replaced. They have to program the mileage into the new cluster so there is nothing suspicous about what they told you.

I suspect you have a computer glitch which the dealer will fix and the car's history is fine.

Thank for this information.

Meanwhile, the problem is solved. My garage in my town compared the CDI with an identical car and went trough all the electric stuff.
So they found out that additional stuff was attached. It lead to a anti-carjack system.
I checked the MB garage where the car got its maintenance but they did not know anything about this. Tomorrow i will get the car and see if everything is o.k.
The 2 guys of the small garage are known to be very good mechanics and not playing around. I have more trust in them than a 'payroll' mechanic in the MB garage, although i will go to the MB garage for serious stuff.

Thanks anyway, i will cry out if another problem comes up ...
