I have a strange problem with my SRS system. The system checks out OK on initial diagnostics when ignition is turned on, but after about 5-10 secs, the SRS light comes back on and 'airbag turned off' light comes on the centre console. If a passenger is present, the SRS light will go off if their weight is distrbuted across the front of the seat. I know there ae sensors in the front passenger seat to detect the presence of an MB child seat and to disable the airbag if it is installed. Has anyone experienced this problem before ?

This problem is either the seat sensor pad or the wiring under the seat, quite common

Sounds like passenger seat recognition pad. Have the fault codes read to make a proper diognosis.

This appears to be a fairly common problem -
my E320 / 1999 Elegance Estate has the same problem. (only had it a couple of months)

It appears on the notification list at the last Mercedes service a year ago.

" Intermittent SRS/Airbag warning traced to baby seat monitor in passenger seat - Leather seats, to replace Sensor approx £400.

I was quite perturbed as the MOT was due in May, checked with MOT prior to Test - " The Airbag nonfunctioning is not covered in the MOT Test "

MERCAID, local Indie, Two branches, (Essex - HiIGHLY RECOMMENDED - look up their new website and Customers Forum...)

stated they would do it somewhat cheaper, but leather seats are a devil to
replace the Baby Sensor, cloth is much less problem.

Decided to live with the problem - hoping that someone much more knowledgable will tell me if the faulty sensor can be disconnected ???

Doesn't make much difference to replace wether leather or cloth, in fact, most people who have changed these would have probably done more leather, due to it being more common in a Merc.

Child Seat recognition unit.

Yep, replaced the seat sensor pad and cured the problem. Cost was £108 plus 1.5 hrs of my time. P/N is 210-821-2151 if anyone is interested.

There is a way.

Solder in a 3 ohm resistor on to the connection to the recognition pad.

I would never do it as it is dangerous to do. The srs system would think there is never anyone in the seat and the airbag(s) on the passenger side would not go off in an accident.

Could you have that on your mind when you carry a passenger?

What you need is a quick (cheap) fix to replace the sensor pad (like the 3 ohm resistor) that will always enable the passenger airbag and set it off in an accident. Better to go off even if a passenger is not sitting there rather than not to go off at all (except of course if you use child seats in the front, even then a switch could be added to turn them off in this eventuality). Why does MB complicate the system with technology that is unreliable anyway (not to mention the cost of an MB child seat). Other manufacturers use a highly complex device called a switch so that you can manually turn the passenger airbag off when you use a child seat in the front.

Passenger seat sensor.

My SRS light has come on and a computer check confirms the seat sensor fault.
£108 is crazy. What pins need the 3 ohm resistor across them for the disabling fix, or is there a better, air bag always will deploy on impact irrespective of a passenger fix. I will never need a baby seat fitting, the kids are now over 20 yrs!!

Hello BlackC55. same problem on my e class. passenger occupancy sensor!!! do you know if i get hold of one from a scrap yard, will it work? obviously after getting the problems reset. also this mighty 3 ohm resistor... can you give more details, where to buy and how to fit. i am aware of where it plugs in under the seat but there are three wires on that yellow connector, which two require the resistor?

Hi, I have tried to quick-fix this by fitting an emmulator from Ebay - din't work. So I'm going to try the resistor. Does anyone know which contacts on the yellow plug I should solder the 3 ohm resistor to?

Recently completed the repair as detailed in the above link.
I did not have to replace the sensor as I found one of the connecting wires was broken due to the zip tie securing the 3 wires to the base of the seat being too tight.

I simply soldered 3 new wires from the white box to the connector and put it all back together.
