E220 CDI W210 Fan Not Cutting In

Together with the fan warning message in the speedo.

I separated the connector that is clipped to the fan housing and there is no voltage at the terminals as the temperature rises.

The fan motor it spins freely by hand - is it safe to put 12v across it to check the motor?

Further to http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=19270&highlight=fan+warning I applied 12v to the fan. It spins up but draws a lot of current doing so - the wires get hot. This seems wrong but please note - the fan motor was covered in diesel recently and has since been steam cleaned.

May be the sensor is OK but a fuse has blown? Any advice gratefully received.

i belive that the 210 is the same as the 211 and fan is controlled via engine control module, if im right then the fan is controlled via PWM, i dont belive it is fused due to the high currant but hopefully some one on here could correct me if im wrong, if thats the case you will need a star report!!

If there isn't a fan control relay on the fan cowling, then i think its under the n/s/f wheel arch liner, on chasis in front of wheel. check 1st.

No, there's only a connector on the cowling and the cables look to be disappearing off in that general direction.

Turned out to be the fan motor. Most probably some of the windings had broken down and were shorting. Took out the 70A fuse (number 20 in the engine bay, but not listed).
