Just bought my 2004 E220 CDI with 70,000 on the clock, and a 6 speed manual. I used to have a W202 C250D with the 5 speed manual and its gearbox could be operated with 1 finger. Particularly when cold, 1st and reverse are anything but easy to engage - it's feels like thick glue is hindering operation - all other gears are fine.

Is this normal on this box - I was expecting single finger operation again...(and yes, I know you have to lift the gearstick to engage reverse, before anyone asks...)

I can hardly believe this,,I believe you and this was something that was sorted years back, is it to do with the colder weather.

Have you checked the linkage, i had the same issue with selecting gears, one of the torque/ alan screws had come loose and only gripped now and again. Quarter of a turn and all fixed.

Not surprising this, my C220 cdi 6 speed manual is difficult to engage 1st, and reverse (and also 2nd) in cold weather. I have heard lower the gearbox oil livel by one litre, and it will be better. (see other posts here in the past). I have yet to do it but will try soon as its annoying
