I have a UK spec E220 COUPE 1996 Last of the old 124s
Great car but getting info on the 111.960 engine is a problem. It has Bosch HFM  injection SYSTEM and a 16 pin diagnostic socket. The following pins are present-1,6,8,10,12,16. I want to read the flash codes on the ECU. Could anyone out there tell me the exact pin identities  so I can retreive the codes thanks

I could be wrong here GROBER but wouldn't you require MB specific hardware to be able to hook up to the ECU to read diagnostic codes? I know thats the case for my 1998 W202 C240. Even if I could "acquire" the software to stick on me laptop, there is a hardware dongle that is required to enable the software to run. Perhaps the W124's are different, hehe and perhaps I've misunderstood the question.

*EDIT* welcome to the forum by the way :)

there are ways to retrieve the codes using a high input impedance led PROBE, or digital voltmeter on these earlier cars. see http://www.mercededshop.com/diy_stevebfl_1.htm   The haynes diagnostic fault codes manual 3472 chapter 22 lists all the merc fault codes to about 1999,and how to extract them. Its true the later obd2 cars are best diagnosed with a fault code reader but these cost £700+ with the right software. A led probe is about £10. I leave you to do the sums.  Trouble is my car falls between the later 32 socket OBD2  cars and the the good old bosch -jetronic EZL Ignition cars. The haynes manual also states that the ECU output pin on my 16 pin socket is pin3, but THERE IS NO PIN3 on my DIAGNOSTIC socket? Hence the question.

Fault Code Readers

Hi Anonymous

I've read elsewhere in this forum that there are other devices similar the the Fault Code Reader you mention (£700+) that can do the same job for less than £100. Have you encountered any of them?

Are these devices useful in diagnosing/repairing or are they only useful for obtaining fault codes that can be relayed to technicians when discussing problems?

Diagnostic sockets, more than one?

Hi All

Are there two diagnostic sockets in modern MBs? If so, where are they usually to be found and what type are they? Pin configurations?
