E220 for Towing

can anyone advise on the suitability of an e220, '94, auto for towing a caravan. all-up weight around 1250kg. Do I need to fit an auto box coloer ? does it pull the  weight  of a van easily. what is it like on gradients etc. I am about to change from a Volvo 740.

One thing is certain, you will need a tin hat once all the others realise you are a cravanner!!.......just ride the storm, i do!!

I do think a 220 might be a bit down on power for that size of van, i changed from a 250D for that same reason.
