Hi all,

I have a 95 E220 which is running very rough at idle. I cleaned the throttle body, but it made little difference. I thought I would clean the idle control valve to see if that improves things. Can anyone tell me where it is and the best way of cleaning it?

Many thanks,
Jim

Thanks Nick - I guess that is one less thing to worry about, then. I'll do the MAF sensor instead... :)

I think that your car uses the early Motronic injection system, at least it will not be on the throttle body switch as the idle goes high when the switch fails and the car runs off the main ECU rather than the idle part.

It could well be the MAF on early cars, they seem to be more affected at idle, than the later sensor type

Cheapest from Bosh and ½ the MB price,, you could just unplug the MAF and see if Idle is OK My Volvo has had the MAF disconnected for the last 6 months while I am saving to buy a new one

Thanks Malcolm,

I'll try disconnecting it today - I'm going on a decent run, so I'll see how it does.

One think I did on my 220 was removed the fuses one at a time and polished the ends up with a green scourer made a difference to the idle.

OK, I cleaned the MAF sensor - very little dirt there anyway. It seems to make no difference whether it is connected or not. I'm beginning to wonder about the OVP relay - where abouts is it? I know from other threads that it is behind the battery - I'ver removed the big plastic cover, but can't work out exactly where the relay is. Any tips would be great. Opening it up and resoldering it shouldn't be a problem.

Behind the battery on the right side of the engine ECU, there should be a black cover on it, two 8 mm bolts hold it in place, look for a plug connection next to the battery, 3 brown into one and a red and blue I think, look at the condition of the connection, this plug seems to find its way flat to the metal bulkhead and water gets on the connection, I had to cut them and solder them together.
Also check the loom from the MAF the heat from the manifold tends to destroy the wiring.

Thanks jib, you're a star. I'll have a look at all that tomorrow and see if anything is amiss.
