E220cdi 2008 - purchase now or wait?

So I've been looking at E220cdi's for the last couple of months, and watched their price drop into my budget range.

I've been offered the following from a MB dealer, which fits all my requirements:

E220cdi 2008 (registered in March 08 ) demonstrator saloon car
Avantgarde
Parktronic
10000miles
full leather

at £20.500 (down from £21.990)

Do you think it's a good deal? Or should I wait for another month or two? Do you expect prices to continue falling significantly, especially with the announcement of the new model?

Thanks!

I think that the longer you can hold out the better the deal you will get. I can't see the prices rebounding anytime soon.

The longer you wait the cheaper it will be but the longer you have to wait to drive one too.
You could spend your life waiting for the perfect moment but it is a very good deal and life is too short ......

It is highly likely that prices will fall further in the new year so why not set yourself a deadline? Say wait until 20th Jan and then decide.
Of course "your" car may have been sold by then so there is no perfect answer.

It is a good price for an E220 and if the car is the spec you want, the colour you want, then it may be worth considering buying now.

Wll prices drop further? the concensus in the trade is Jan, Feb will continue to be difficult trading months however, used vehicles will start to sell but margins will be thin.
New vehicle will be the problem for everyone next year!

What a good buy, I cannot find a decent 08 C220 cdi avantgarde for under 24k down in the south, is the E Class cheaper to begin with?

Unless you want to keep it years (and I mean 4 years or more) then you are best to contract hire at the moment.

I was quoted £259 a month for a new C220cdi estate auto with the mbtex or whatever it is called now.
An 18 month old, old shape would loose more than that in depreciation alone even if you bought it cash.
That was for 10k miles a year over 24 months or 15k miles a year over 3 years.

He also said Mercedes were throwing loads more deals at the contract hire firms on Jan 5th so it would be getting cheaper!

New E220cdi for £260 a month!!

Mercedes UK have been giving up to £12k off a new E220cdi in December, so right now there are some very good deals on E classes.

I bought a E220 CDI in March of this year ( in France where I live ) The retail price was 49000€ I paid 36000€ a 13000€ discount. Was it a bargin NO the was never worth this price in the 1st place. After 9 months of E-Class ownership I now know why MB have to discount these cars so much.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

I'll make them a further offer below £20k and will see their reaction. But I agree with the consensus that it's a lot of car for the money.

PMA, you sound quite dissatisfied with your E-class, care to share why?

Am I correct in thinking that the 6 month up-front payment is never returned?

That's right, it is a deposit.

However if you email them they will do 3 x 23. Which is 3 months down and then 23 payments, they will do a bit of a deal.

But add it all up, if you are wanting a car for 2-3 years, then it makes a lot of sense, you would loose more than that buying a 3 year old car cash over the same period.

Happy New Year to everyone!!

As an update to the original post, I still haven't bought the car and waiting to see how markets go in the first 2 weeks of Jan, before making my decision.

@carabind, it seems that Parktronic commands at least a £1000 premium (despite being a £300 option) from all the cars I've looked at. A large car like the E, I'm too wary to buy it without parktronic. One brush with a wall or lamp-post, and the repairs could potentially get expensive...

well some of us have e classes and manage quite well without parktroinic!!! You might get used to it, I did ! If I were you,
I would extend buying till nearer end of jan when the dealers will be getting desparate to hit their monthly sales quotas. At this time of the year (post xmas) , even silly offers have to be taken seriously and you should bag a bargain!
And you could always ask them to fit parktroinic as a retroft option? (though others will know if this can be done cost effectively)

Parktronic itself possibly not, but there are plenty of very good after market sensor systems out there. With these, personally I'd avoid anything with a visual display as none look as good as the MB system and most look cheap and tacky, but I have an audio only one in the freelander (factory fit) and don't find it any harder to use than my parktronic.
I would agree that it's a very useful tool on the E. I'm pretty good spacially (used to drive a transit with a trailer) and I'd certainly miss it.
