E230 97 (W210) key & park stuck

Having now replaced a faulty key with a factory replacement, i put it in the ignition and hey presto it worked and the car started first time. But and there is always a BUT, thats how far i got. The key is now stuck in ignition, starts and turns off ok, but will not release itself from the ignition DAS.
The gear selector is stuck in park and will not release, i have released park brake and still no joy.
Have released the flap by the D in drive but cannot see whether there is a release spring to push (well it was dark). The brake lights work so i am presuming the brake switch works.
Anyone any ideas ?

Could still be brake light switch even though brake lights work. Didn't think you would have a flap by "D" as you haven't got Tiptronic on a 97 car.

As type 49, this is a listed fault, though we have not had many, its worth changing the brake light switch £10
