E230 Estate - Rear seat catch broken - how can you get at it

Hi There!

I'm new to the website and would really appreciate some help...

I've got a 1996 E230 estate, great car, very happy, except we can't use the estate since my wife went to release the back seat catch to lower it and something snapped (I suspect the plastic lug on the other end of the plastic lever).

I've just spent an hour trying to (a) get into the seat back and (b) release the seat to work on it. I have failed at both. The plastic on the top of the seats (under the headrests) seems very brittle and I can't work out how to get it off :cry: any ideas?

Has anyone had a similar problem and if so how did then get the seat down to look at the problem? Then what did they do to get into the seat?

Sorry I can't help you really. But we have had the problem on a couple of cars which necessitated the stripping of the back seat & a lot of cursing. Its one of the jobs you just have to persist a fiddle.

PS. If its any consolation. The replacement parts are quite cheap.

Thanks. I suspected it was a pig of a job!

The seat is resolutely locked in the upright position at the moment! How do I get into the seat mechanism from the top any ideas?
