I travelled about 4 miles to a garage to put some air in the tyres, after which I tried to start the car, she turned over but wouldn't fire up. After a few attempts I left it for a few minutes, then she started ok. the same thing happened a couple of days later at the same garage after putting some juice in.then the day after I pulled up at a roundabout outside the same garage and she cut out on me and only started after leaving it a few minutes.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be? ( Don't say stay away from that garage)

I strongly suspect that the crankshaft position sensor has gone down, a common problem and fits your description of syptoms.

Now this might sound ridiculous But I once had a Montego which when parked outside a friiends factory would not let me disable the alarm system This happened countless times and the only probable cause was Mobile phone mast around 500 yards away on top of a 10 storey building ! my own place less than 1/4 mile away and all fine .(worth checking about ).and the ridiculous part is : I loved that old Monty ,even towed lorries with it !.

Hello sigman
I did wonder that something like that might be the cause, but it packed up on me again at some trafic lights in a different place miles away.
Can you or anyone else tell me where the camshaft sensor is situated and is it easy enough to replace.
Thanks

Hi Bob ,I think it's the CRANKshaft sensor you mean ,will try to find out for you if nobody comes up with the answer here ,I do know there is a torque setting when refitting which is important and normally held in place by a single bolt on engine block .

Its located on the end block, back right as you look at it, very close to the bell housing, two pin plug on it.

stand on the passenger side wing, look down the back of the engine and you should see it

Hello
I ordered a crankshaft sensor from GSF Lincoln, picked it up last Tuesday
(cost me £67.62.) A bit awkward to fit but I managed it( my wrist will heal in time)
My merc is running like new again.
Thank you for your help. You've saved me a few bob.
