start with that and monitor tyre wear. I tend to find that at standard levels, the outer edges wear too much, so add 2psi to even things out.

Thats right, and I am letting a little air out as mine wear in the middle first on the rears,, my wide tyres do not last long

If you speak to the much vilified tyre fitters (Kwik Fit, several threads) they will confess that for most cars they just use "30 all round" - so if you have new tyres fitted, it is worth ensuring that they are at the pressures you prefer.

I suspect that, like many motorists if have checked weekly for ages, found no variation, and reduced the checks to once in a (long) while. It would be a pity to rely on abnormal wear as the first evidence of incorrect inflation.

And with the questionable accuracy of their pressure gauge, 30 all round could be anywhere between 25 & 36 psi.

I just swopped front to rear on mine as the fronts are wearing off on the outside shoulder. Pressures are perfect and the rears are wearing very evenly, the fronts have been wearing due to enjoying myself in the twisties :)

We cant all swap front to back sadly, apart from the appearance I wish that I had the same width back and front,, I never drive to the point that the wider rears are of any benifit

This is the first time I've done it as the rears tended to wear quite quickly previously. Mine are 245 all round and too wide IMHO, I don't think the turning circle is a good as my 210 and I think it is down to the wide tyres. I just picked up another trolley jack so it made it a lot easier changing the wheels and I even remembered to use the alloy locating pin.

I only tried using the alloy centering pin once and it jammed in,, it was in a sorry looking state when I got it out, so some lubricant would not go amiss on the pin, make a big difference on the wheel bolts too

which is why I always carry a pencil gauge in the glove box. I know it's right and as you say, most gauges aren't. So with it i know that my 12v pump overreads by 2psi and can be a bit more confident when I use garage pumps. It's also easy to quickly check the pressures.
