Guys,

I need some help here chaps, tonight on the way home I've sucked up from the road what looks like a scarf...

any way, it got into the fan belt, thats been thrown off, and it looks like a plastic tensioner at the top of the engine has been damaged - any chance some one could post a pic of what the belt lay out should be and what the top tensior should look like

Thanks

You sure are lucky there, some years ago a mate at work was driving home (at speed) when he ran over a black dusty-bag. anyway, he didn't fuss but carried on regardless, turns out it wrapped itself up in the fan belt and all, resulting in a major engine seizure situation. How unlucky is that?

Are you sure that the tensioner or water pump or something hasnt failed which has shreaded the belt making it look like a scarf? Dont mean to state the obvious but how eles did it get there?

The belt is in one still & the label on the scarf saying "Tesco F&F 100% Kasmir" gives it away :D

It most likely the water pump failure that caused the belt to loosen.

You are lucky. Mine happened when I was driving along A1 south, the steering stiff because the power steering gone. The coolant everywhere and damaged the underbonnet paintwork. Never press the belt to test it, this caused water pump gasket failure.

The water pump it's self is fine - its the kasmir scarf stuck in the alternator is the problem, it's stuck hard and fast, but looks like the plastic tensioner on top of the water pump has fail, the plastic looks melted so I guess the belt over heated on the alternator...

Well she's gone to Nation Wide accident center, North Wales Mercedes accident center. got to say I'm really impressed with the service.

They had no "large" loan cars so they have hired me a Chevy Captiva 4x4... which, whilst not a Mercedes is still a very high spec and fine looking motor... fair better then the Ford Ka offered by by insurance company, who wanted to take the motor to a Ford Dealer...
