E270 Auto - Newbie Questions 1 and 2

After using a big Merc diesel auto 4x4 I decided to buy myself my first ever Merc. I settled on a 270 avantgarde auto Jan 2003. Its just had a C service

Love the feel inside the car. But the driving experience????

Using the accelerator I feel as though I have to press quite hard all the time with resistance against me.

If I rev the car in any gear above 16 to 17 on the rev counter the noise is deafening! Its as though a tractor started up next to me! Under 16 or 17 revs and its quite fine

Is this the same for all of you? In the Merc 4x4 the accelerator was light and easy (like most other cards I've owned) and its diesel engine was fairly quiet

So I was wondering:

1. Is it the age of the car?
2. Are these E270's all the same and I'll just have to get used to it
3. Is something wrong????

No
No
and No again

Once above 5mph or so, you shouldn't be able to hear that it's a diesel at all.
I do think the throttle pedels tend to be long travel and relatively heavy compared to "lesser" cars. well, in my experience anyway!

This is the case with MB throttles you can get a device called a Sprint booster that transforms the throttle, and makes it very responsive

My throttle is quite light. Very un-mechanical.
Noise wise, when she's cold she is rather tractor like, but once warmed up she's pretty quiet and unless you're thrashing it, no real noise at all, certainly from the inside anyway. Not the quietest diesel from the outside but you're not outside it when the engine is running.

Not sure about the throttle - but noise wise 2 things come to mind.
The 270 engine is prone to engine mount failures - I've had mine replaced and it's younger than yours.
The other suggestion is the air filter box mounts. From the outside, mine made a good impression of a B52 on takeoff. (couldn't hear it inside though).
They are rubber bushes and can be damaged if oil has spilled down there (during a top up). Easy check, just put your hand on the box lid. If it quietens it down, you need new mounting bushes.

Thanks for your replies

Today I'm depressed. Took it my local independant dealer....

apparently coolant from the radiator has entered the gearbox

Result = New radiator, new gearbox, new torque convertor

£4500 fitted

I don't think I will be buying another Mercedes

lots of people quote for a new gearbox but we've had a lot of discussion on the Valeo radator issue and whilst the torque converter could be shot, there is some doubt as to whether the gearbox should need anything more than an oil change. The gearbox is a normal thing to change with these issues but may be unnecessary. Do get it looked at before writing the cheque.
Also have they done as discussed in
