This morning I left the house quickly, jumped into my e class e270 cdi and just as I was driving out of my road the car lost power (it was still able to travel at limited speed) I pulled over a turnt the engine off for a few mins, then restarted and everything was ok). So far it hasn't happened again. There were no warning lights on, the computer display said no malfunctions so I’m abit worried....... was this due to the cold engine or isit something I have to worry about? I looked on the vosa website and I see there was a recall for something similar to this... I called MB and they said that it wasn’t on my reg so not that!? What happens if it is this how do I appeal??? Thanks people, Len

i have been having this problem on my c220 cdi for 12months now, sometimes it will go for months without it happening sometimes it will do it a few times in one day,but each time it happens if i turn ignition off then restart it is ok again, three months ago i put some injector cleaner in the tank and it hasn't done it since.

If a switch off cured it,i'd start with the Air Mass Sensor. It is by far the most common cause of power loss due to safe mode engaging. There are other causes on a 270 related to turbo sensors and the like but its a very good place to start.
I've only experienced power loss once on my 270. Very cold damp evening, started up, drove 200 yards, put my foot down and nothing much happened to 10 seconds or so. But it only happened once and power came back on its own, so I've ignored it.

hi thanks for the reply! Made me a bit more re-assured! It was cold this morning, I jumped in the car and drove off straight away, same as you. Did you stop and restart? also will MobiloLife cover this if all services are up to date? I know there was a recall in relation to the car ENGINE MAY REVERT TO LIMP HOME MODE -
Description : The differential pressure sensor for the diesel particulate filter can fail due to contamination of the protective gel layer by exhaust gases. This will result in the car reverting to limp home mode (restricted engine speed).
Remedial Action : Replace the differential pressure sensor with the latest modified type.

I have spoken to the mb garage - they say my car isnt one of them where do i stand it is!!
thanks

I didn't turn mine off, just pressed on and it eventually came back. It could just be one of those things so I wouldn't worry. If it does happen again then either get a diagnostic done or just replace the MAS (£60 roughly from Bosch). There was a rumour that they are becoming a service item but whatever, they are by far the most common cause of safe mode. Well ahead of any other cause.
If it did stay that way and your last service was at a dealer, then yes, Mobilio should come out and collect you. They may even replace the MAS there and then at the roadside, it's not unheard of.

Very doubtful injector cleaner will have had an effect.

In almost all cases, it's a sensor (normally MAS) playing up. Once the ECU has given up on it, it will engage safe mode. Switching off basically gives the sensor a fresh chance and if it's dicky rather than failed it may be wrong but still close enough for the ECU to give it the benefit of the doubt.
The point is that if it is reading incorrectly, it may not be far enough out to upset the ECU but by giving false readings the car may be running rich which over a long period can do damage to the cats and O2 sensors. So worth getting it checked.

I really appreciate your comments on this! I've just got the car and already I have had to folk out £100 for a puncherd tyre!!!!! lol Hope this doesn't prove costly.... 2 more things if you dont mind:
1) I usualy do about 35 mpg around town but now im doing 30, is this something to worry about ?

2) In relation to the re-calls, could this be related evn thought MB have said not on my reg? The recall notice if you look on VOSA website is similar to what has happend to me!

As always, looking forward to your reply!

Have u checked if your car has a particulate filter ..very few were fitted to uk spec cars prior to 06.. and if it has it will do a burn off around every 600mls or so..change in exhaust note and car will run less smoothly for about 3-5 mins and return to normal tho no loss in power ..but the faulty ones will go into limp mode
