Hi everyone,

Can anyone give me some quick advice. I am going to look at a E270 CDI saloon this afternoon with a view to buying it. It is a 2003 elegance auto/tiptronic full leather, silver, full history, 110,000 miles on the clock but due a service now. He is asking £9995 for it. What should I look out for on the test drive and looking around the car.

Don't know if i'm doing the right thing, my current car is a E300 TD elegance seven seater estate with 162,000 miles on the clock, had it for four years with with no major problems.

Any advice please

mmm.
The 270 is a nice motor - but I would say that.
2003 bothers me a bit. prior to mid/late 2004 the electronics can be troublesome and expensive to sort. Our 2003 E220 cost us over £2k in 'modules' and it still has the odd niggle. Also, it's still an early one that may not have been galvanised. If you have to change then fair enough but otherwise I may be tempted to hold off a little while longer until a slightly newer one comes along.

If you do look at it,
1) Has the gearbox oil been done?
2) Check rear wheelarches for any rust.
3) Check for any warnings on the computer display.
4) Check for any clunks from the front suspension. Should have been done under recall though.
5) FSH essential obviously.

It seems like quite a lot of money as well considering the age & mileage.

At this price you can find a similar age S320CDI with similar mileage, Fuel consumption on the S is not too different from the E class and surely it is a better car. I think that the S class is a real bargain at the moment

I think 03 was not a good year..........definitely not.

I had a breakdown on 11 Feb 2004. The guy who picked up my car had already picked up 4 2004 Mercs.....beat that, 5 weeks into a year and 4 breakdowns!!! They were all 2003 manufacture. I would wait or actually buy older.
