A couple of times recently the auto box seems to "diss-engage" driving along at 70 i then put my foot down and the engine just revs, the first time this happened i knocked it into 4th/3rd etc and it changed down i put it back in D and all was well. Today the same thing happened except i could not select any gear, so whilst still moving i put it into N then back into D and all was fine. The final issue was when i got back parked left the car 20 minutes went back and selected reverse, the car moved backwards but very slowly again i selected D put it back into R and it was fine.

The car has done 74k, been regularly service at MB dealership and was last serviced 1000 miles ago.

Is this gonna hurt the wallet? and any ideas what it is?

Can i also add that at no time have there been any warning lights or malfunctuions showing, not even during the time when it is happening.

Your car will have to go to a gear box specialist, and one of the best one in the UK is in Exeter.

The fault codes need to be read then ATF level checked.

Update to gearbox issues

Took the car into local MB dealer today. The gearbox has been leaking oil due to coroded pipes and so has been very low on oil. They need to replace four pipes (two of which are on back order in Germany, so possibly a two week wait unless they can get from another dealer) and then they will need to road test to see if there has been any damaged cause.

What is the likelyhood of any other damage?

It very much depends on how much atf has been leaked out.

Youi maybe lucky you may not be.

Thanks BlackC55. I thought about bringing the car to you but it was touch and go if the 7 miles to MB dealer was too far let alone a 60 mile trip to you.

The dealer has said it had lost a lot of oil but it was not empty and that the fact that it was changing gear is a good sign.

When driving it this morning it seemed OK except when you needed to pull away quickly in the lowest gear, the rest of the gear changes seemed OK but possibly a little slow.

These pipes seem to be very elusive!
