It's traditional for me to have a last minute wobble before I take the plunge, and this will probably fizzle out quickly. But has anyone any experience of the diesel S-Type before I buy an E270cdi? Putting aside looks, I'm attracted by its supposedly ultra smooth engine and good reliability, both (so I read) better than early W211s. Am I mad?

Have driven the engine in a RRS and it is very very smooth. Can't say much for the performance in the S type though as the Rangie weighs 3 tonnes. The car is bound to be better.

A amte of mine has the RR sprot with the 2.7, I personally thought from the outside it was a little agricultural, Im sure its better in the jag. compare the BHP, Torque and MPG between the two cars.

I meant that from inside it was very smooth and quiet. There again, that could be partly due to the size of the thing.

No personal experience, but I've only heard good things about the (Peugeot / Ford) engine.
It needs all the belts (3, I think) changing at a certain mileage, but I can't remember what this is - I think it was either 100K or 150K miles but you might want to check out the interval and the cost of that job, if you're looking at a high mileage version, or you're likely to hit that during ownership.
I also remember there was a problem with them messing up their diff's as it couldn't handle the torque of the 2.7 diesel engine.

One generic problem with the S Type is that the boot is surprising small - make sure you can live with that.

you're certainly not mad looking at alternatives. By all accounts the 2.7 S type is excellent. I suspect the jag 2.7 is a better engine than the Merc one, if simply due to the fact that it's a more moden unit (the Merc one was discontinued around the time the jag was released). Clarkson raced one round Nuburgring so it must be pretty good - he certainly thought so. That said, the merc is also very good (I love mine) and i think the merc looks much better and I believe is better equipped...but then the Jag should be considerably cheaper .. it goes on ...
Drive both, then decide.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. This really isn't like other forums I've frequented for other cars I've owned. Suggesting any other kind of car or marque normally brings down a shower of scorn, so thanks again.

We don't want Mercedes (who may monitor the forum) to think we're too sycophantic to the marque. They might get complacent. :)

From memory the cam belt change on the Jaguar is a biggie ! Approx £1200 at 60,000 mile intervals. Explains why you see alot for sale at 55,000 or 115,000 mile-ish!

There is a chap who works with me who has a Jag S-Type 2.7 Sport D and loves it to bits, had a c-class before. It is a nice looking car and he apparently gets a remarkable fiel consumption out of it. Good value pre=owned as well

Well, I bought an S-Type after all. You get a lot more S-type than you do E270cdi for £13k, and the Jag undeniably has more of a sense of occasion about it. Wonderfully smooth and quiet, the engine is more of a turbine than an motor. More thirsty at 35mpg, less practical in a number of ways and less handsome than a W211 I imagine, but I'm happy with my choice so far. In case you were wondering!

I have experience of the 2.7 engine in both manual gearbox and auto in Discovery 3 series and S type with auto box.

I think its a cracking engine, more than adequate for the Disco and a smooth, fast option in the S type.

Auto Disco did about 27mpg on my 100 mile round trip commutes on the motorway with cruise set at 75mph genuine speed. As I was paid a fuel allowance I opted for manual box after that and got what I consider brilliant fuel performance for a 2.7 tonne beast of 31mpg. In the Jag S type, driven a bit more spiritedly, I used to average about 36mpg
