my car is E280 make in 1996, 2 weeks ago, i face the problem that the transmission cannot switch up to gear 5, its only can go to gear 4. I get to know this by refer to RPM, cause when its gear 5, the RMP shall be 3000 when i drive for 140KM/H. but now its .3000 rpm when i run at 110km/H.
and i have try to change from D to 4, and turn back .its not work at all.
So, i had send it to workshop, the technical person try to change few parts for me .but its still don't work, the part change including 019 545 78 32.
The car is working fine until gear 4. no matter its using S mode or E mode.
do anybody know what happen on that, and what should i do?

Your car then with E and S means that it could be a 4 speed or 5 speed box

Do enter the complete VIN number here, and find out what you have, do not forget that your car starts in 2nd unless you kick it down into first

Malcolm, he mentions having "D" and "4" selectable on the stick. I think that kinda says it's a 5 box.

So if the 5 speed box and he has 4 normal shifts, if he adds the kick down into first, that makes 5

Has anything been changed on the car recently or has anything else stopped working?

The change from 4 to 5 is done via a solenoid and is controlled by the engine ECU and the 4-5 switch. I believe there's a connection to a speed sensor in the speedo as well

The part you replaced appears to be a gearbox ECU / relay box. If that hasn't cured the problem I'd try a manual switch to shift to 5th to make sure the box is functioning OK. If it is the fault's in the control circuit. If it doesn't shift look at the control solenoid

To switch it manually you'd have to rig up a switch to operate the solenoid. You'd need some knowledge of the circuitry to do this

You could try a really simple test - wire a bulb across the solenoid and see if it lights when the box "tries" to shift

Remember,

It's a 1996 280. This wouldn't have the kickdown into first feature. Only on Prefacelifted W124's.

There is nothing listed for the box anywhere to say that any series starts in first, the 2nd gear start applies to the 124028/032/052/066/088/092

To check the correct gear, accelerate to 62 mph move the gear shift to 3rd gear approx 4500rpm, move to 4th 3150, and 2300 in D
