More likely a fluid change, check service record when was it last done. Some say 70K some say 40K some say every 3 years.

Which model is it - 124 or 210? It depends which gear is being lost. It can be a couple of things. 4th gear going is quite common and normally points to worn inards and a re-build. But normally once its gone its gone. It can be the hydraulic valve sticking due to age or a bit of crud in the oil. Is it hot or cold when it happens? Next time it happens, try moving the gearlever into 3rd while still rolling and see if drive returns, then plonk it into D again. This exercises the valve and hopefully this is the problem. Cheaper than a rebuild.
