    go with 320...

280 is tuned down engine for more economy but in my view, if you want economy then you should really be looking at 220

By the looks of things, for good economy, and good performance, the 320 is your answer.

    Hi

    Good stuff
I was really more after a 'newer' car and fancied the v6
    Engine
However after reading some other posts
I think I might stick with my 270 for a bit
There is nothing wrong with it what do ever
Plus the fact I like the two
Exhausts out the back of the sports!!

I have a (07) 280 sports, would highly recommend it, an absolutely pleasure to drive, and enough power/performance. You wouldn't go wrong with either choice.

I've been in both a 280cdi and a 320cdi. There isn't an awful lot in it. My car has a bit more urge in the mid range and is a little faster, the 280cdi with its smaller injectors a little more refined, but both are nice and both have the same pitfalls and good points.

I have posted extensively about the OM642 engine and having seen £2500 worth of faults in 40k miles you might expect I might, I really don't rate the 7g box which is the only transmission you get with these cars.

Sport trim is the big plus and you can't get that in a diesel 211 unless its a 280cdi or 320cdi. Sport adds paddles to a lazy and lethargic box, better seats (the one big thing) and uprated brakes and firmer suspension. I still think the sport is miles too soft, so having a Blistein B12 prokit fitted but I drive in a very exubarant manner on great Scottish back roads.

The engine is a miracle of refinement, low and high speed, gentle and normal use economy, and very powerful. Makes the petrols redudant unless you go for an AMG.

However, I cannot rate the engine for a reliability point of view, whilst these do 45mpg plus, they do not have the maintaince costs of a 45mpg car, and in reality, you need a reserve of around £3000 to spend on parts that fail. Inlet port shut off motors, engine bearings, 7g valve body faults, manifold clogging, all cost £1k plus a pop.

The later ones are better, but the sweet spot is probably the facelifted 211 E220cdi with 170bhp (270cdi power) and the proven 5g box, better economy, very very reliable, and in AG trim still a pleasant large car.
