Waiting for a mate with Star reader but always fire it up to keep it fresh.
Yesterday it was ticking over then a rattle and engine cut out.
Thought it might be out of diesel so put a few gallon in
Cranked and cranked til it fired up, LOADS of white smoke, rattled again and cut out. Any ideas ?
TIA

Are you saying it hasn’t been driven for a while ?

Om642 v6? Check if your egr valve is stuck open. You can remove the little black plastic cover to reveal the mechanism. It’ll be obvious if it’s stuck open. I’ve seen this before a few times on cars that have been laid up

Sounds like an injector has jammed open to me and its dumping diesel into the cylinders...which is pretty common on a 642 (White smoke being the marker here)

I Wouldnt keep cranking it if I were you, unless you are any good at catching con rods.

Ok update is, star connected showed loads of error codes so all removed. Turned it over with easy start and off it went. Now starts first turn which it has never done as it seemed glow plugs weren't working.
Now the fault code for suspension is 5501 which is odd as this rear o/s hasn't been touched i did the n/s air bag so now its pump out and direct wire to see what happens. Hate cars me

Battery is fine, i'm going to drop the compressor and wire direct to see if it raises the suspension. I've put a longer 4mm pipe and push in fittings to give me more room to move. Fingers crossed

Pump runs but seems to have no power so now options, refurb pump, replace pump or bite the bullet and do a spring conversion if anyone is selling the kit at a decent price. HELP

Did you check wires near the connectors are ok? Intake filter and pipe clean and clear?

Next step is check if dryer beads are still solid and not gone porrige. At the same time you can change/dry beads, and change piston ring and seals.

Of course option is chinese compressor unit ~150 currency unit, bought one couple of year ago and installed my ex W220, still running ok when I last saw the car.

Ok here's the latest, pump runs fine with good pressure and solenoid works. To count out any leaks i have run a pipe from my small compressor to the manifold block that's the one with live in and one running to each air bag but STILL suspension will not rise. Can this manifold be problematic ?. Couldn't hear any leaks so what now ?.
TIA

If you have pressure you must have a leak. If you haven't a leak you can't have enough pressure.

It's a simple system if you're bypassing the electronics.

Got plenty pressure and no leaks. Could it be the height sensor ?. What are the plugs at the top of the air bags for, if u/s would it stop air getting into the airbag. Sorry for all the questions. Old man now so just want to do minimum amount of work.

When you tested did you do it by feeding 12v direct to the compressor? If so that bypasses all the height sensors.

If not check the rear axle sensor. The link is steel and can rust and break. Simple fix if so....

The linkage attaches to the anti roll bar.

Hi, yes i fed 12v from a battery to both pump and solenoid. I then ran a pipe to the manifold direct from my compressor but no air was going to the airbags so will take your advice and check the sensor. I can repair it if that's the fault fingers crossed. Thanks

Sorry just re read your post, so the height sensor is bypassed if i connect compressor to the manifold. ?

If you force the pump on so it's no longer under electronic control the height sensor will do nothing.

Soooooo.....the sensor will not interfere in the operation...right.
In that case, the car should rise if the air is going into the bag.

Yes. If you put 12v to the pump motor nothing will stop it it rising if it's all working correctly.

It's a very simple system in that state. Simply a pump and set of balloons linked by pipes.

For many years I ran a Defender with air bags at the rear that had no pump. I just used a schrader valve on the rear cross member to inflate or deflate the bags.

Also rallied a mini with the same setup back in the 80s. That was partially filled with ethylene glycol as well and depending on the ratio of air/liquid I could vary spring rates. Air was again added via a schrader valve.
