Hi,
can anyone please let me know the Physical changes in suspension when changing from comfort to sports mode.So far I have noticed slight difference in acceleration only.Is this function synonymous with airmatic DC?

If the car is a 124, then only the shift points are changed in both C and S for both up shifts and down shifts you have to kick down to engage first gear in both

Are you talking about the auto gearbox which has C and S modes? This only affects the gearchanges and not the suspension. C starts in second and changes up later.

Or are you talking about the airmatic suspension? I've had that on the S class which offers 'comfort' (a pleasant bump absorbing ride), 'sport 1' and 'sport 2' which offer a harder ride and less body roll. This has no effect on acceleration though.

Your handbook will give more details.

Thanks HAWK, I was referring to gearbox.

OK, then it just affects the gearing. Starts in second gear in C which can be useful in snow or slippery conditions. Changes up earlier than S mode so quieter. Some find they save a bit on fuel but it is not a lot.

Personally, I drive in S all the time as I like to have the extra urge there when needed -except maybe in very slippery conditions in winter.

Do not forget there is no first gear start on this box unless you use kick down, this is unlike the later 722.6 boxes where S is a first gear start without using kick down

I assume he has the seven speed box on the E280 from 2007? Does that not start in 1st even in S?

Hawk I am so sorry I got the wrong car, there not being a 280 in the 211 range of cars I just thought a 124 This car does indeed have a 7g box that has a 1st gear start, the shift points do change as well in S and C

I must learn to look at the details on the right of the car.

So sorry both Hawk and tsoomro

So easy to do, which is why I say from time to time how much easier it would be if everyone put their car(s) in their signature, model, age etc (as I do).

BTW, just for the record, there is a 280 petrol and a 280cdi in the 211 range.

Indeed you are right, the 280 petrol is as rare as hens teeth but someone has one in Helensburgh. Its a sport model (so exhausts are the same as 280cdi sport) but its a petrol one.

Both these cars have seven speed gearboxes as does the 350 petrol. The 320 petrol has 5speed, as does the 240. The 280 replaced the 240 and the 350 the 320.

I am no expert, but I imagine 2nd on the 7sp box will be a pretty short gear anyway so will give pretty good acceleration from stand still.

There is also a badge test one can do. The CDi is always on the other side to the model number, so if you see a model number then no CDi then you know its a petrol.

The 280 is fitted to the W204, and new SLK and the E class. It is supposed to be a good engine and good value price wise compared to the 350. They do an SL280 on the continent too as an entry level car (on the facelifted fugly SL). It wasn't deemed suitable for the UK as it would erode high spec SLK sales. Shame as it would be a nice car and allow the SL350 to exist as a sporty model and the SL500 as more refined cruiser.

Television (Malcolm) you posted somewhere that coffee spilt on the auto gearchange can cause expensive damage. I've often wondered what would happen if I spilt something there. Can you give more detail of what harm it does and approx cost to put right. I might have to ban coffee in the car!

The fluid gets into the Electronic selector lever and knocks out the CAN communication, the CAN system cannot tell what gear you have selected and the whole system go,s into limp mode, new ESM needed and re-coded into the car! just in-case malc missed this chris!

Thanks SAM; and what would be the cost of putting that lot right? Approx? Probably an expensive coffee!

Thanks. Take care! I was reading an American writer yesterday who said there is one US seven seater estate that comes with 17 cupholders. That is 2.43 per person.
