The Big E asked this question a couple of weeks ago, but no-one seems to have given an explanation of what it is, and I have the same problem.

There is something, which appears to be screwed into the top of the injector pump on the OM606 w124 e300, that obstructs access to No3 glowplug. I've added 2 pictures - its the gold item that looks like some kind of vacuum device.

Question, can it be unscrewed to gain access to the glowplug with a proper socket, then screwed back in after - WITHOUT CAUSING ANY OTHER ISSUES.

If you ask on the US forums http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/index.php they'll be able to tell you what that part is, most of the members there run MBs with the older engines (thats not to say they're not excellent cars, which they are). Some of them are rather fanatical about looking after them, with synthetic oil changes every 5000 miles :/
