If you have a multimeter, check resistance to earth at the glowplug relay connector (NS inner wing) Remove connector plug & check all 6 wires. The resistance value changes with temp but they should all be the same. If one's different, then that one has the fault. The plug has the cylinder numbers on it but only on the relay end & you may need a small mirror to see them.

I have just replaced all six glowplugs (thanks Dieselman for your excellent advice) and although the engine is now starting properly and running evenly when cold, the following is happening, exactly the same before the defective glow plug was replaced. When you turn on ignition, wait until glowplug light goes out then start engine, the glowplug light re-lights after 2/3s and stays on for about 45s. Should it do this? Is there a fault with a relay/timer or does the computer need re-setting as a result of the original glowplug failure? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Run the car through a couple of start up to temperature cycles and it should reset.

Nice to hear it went Ok.
