i have seen 45mpg quoted on adverts selling E300's before!

that figure was heading south (more downhill) from Carlisle to Banbury, non stop at a maximum 70mph, so virtually no acceleration etc to take into account.

i once opened it up to see what it could do (on private ground of course) and the rate that the fuel guage dropped at 135mph, i reckoned i could empty a full tank in about 100 miles!

these were the sorts of trips i could get that mpg on. i couldnt get near it in normal day to day useage. i matched it only once, going to the warrington gtg earlier the same year, driving in the same manner at the same speeds. the running i do currently with the 203 (getting 40+mpg on short runs approx 3.5 miles each way) i would be hard pushed to see much over 20-25 if id still had the E300.

for those who remember me joining the forum, the E300 was the car i had when i joined, which had starting issues, particularly when hot. the engine had very low compression. i wonder what happened to that car because other than the starting (and me not getting on with the auto box) it was really a very nice car!

yes it was a royal pain in the backside! oddly though it started (albeit reluctantly) when the engine had cooled (presumably regaining a little compression) but would flatten the battery in no time when hot!

other than that i did like the car, and almost bought another one prior to inheriting the 203!

I'm lucky enough for mine to start on the button hot and cold! Unfortunately it can have quite a pull to the left more than other cars I've driven but we checked tracking and it came out fine

There are numerous other niggles like the key sticks keeping the starter motor going so you have to slightly turn it back after starting. i think its been lowered by the previous owner and i keep hearing a noise i think the wheel rubs the arch when going over speed bumps  the springs are a "sporty" red colour so i'm guessing they aren't standard.

It does look nice with the amg wheels but you could spend so much trying to sort all the problems out! my drivers side window also wont work unless i take the negative off for 10 seconds until restart i think its a faulty DCM. Oh the joys of a benz! ;) I cant imagine this thing ever seeing 45 mpg!!!

Are you sure the sticking key thing isn't the autostart feature? When you turn the key, the starter spins until the engine starts. Just flick the key over to start and let go of it, the starter should keep turning.

Why not give it to Steve@Avantgarde, he's not that far away from you and knows these cars like the back of his hand. If nothing else, he can plug it in and give you pointers to what's what.

Interestingly on of my friends has a e300d estate with a 8mm superpump and six speed manual and he swears it does well over 40mpg ave. a lot more than it did prior to the conversion ( was auto before).

Did he build the pump himself or where did he get it, if not?

Crikey!
And apart from that word, normally my next word would be 'Thirsty'!
Over 40mpg? Amazing. I bet he drives it with a feather under his foot.

I can assure you he drives it normally a with moments of utter thrashing.

He's no BS merchant and has a skyline that regularly returns single mpg figures.

I suspect that as the engine has been stripped of all the emissions junk, auto tranny, no air con, etc it's able to run a bit more freely.
