Hi I have just joined this forum. I wonder does any one know why my glow plug lamp comes back on after I have started my engine. It also sounds really lumpy too. this has just started to happen. The agents say it needs a NEW fuel injection pump and number 1 glow plug but it starts first time as soon as I turn the key and runs as sweet as a nut when the glow plug switches its self off after 90ish seconds.

You're being conned if they're saying the injection pump

The glow plug coming back on is Mercedes' way (which I praise) of saying one (or more) of your glow plugs are blown.

The easy way of telling which one(s) it is, is to measure the resistance of each plug - should be like testing a light bulb - assuming you can get to the tops of the glow plugs.

You should name and shame your "agent" if he/she is saying the injection pump is needing replaced - shocking!!

thanks pcman, the MAIN agent told me the glow plug needed replacing but warned me that they sometimes break off when they are being removed and that they would need to spend 5 hours @£97. normally to rectify this. then the bombshell was that an injection pump was also needed at just over £1000. plus 5hrs. labour @£97, but service ex. meant I pay just £500.for the pump. Thanks for your help.

Where in the country are you? Find a local independant, and get all 6 plugs changed at the same time. You can do it yourself, but its tricky and they can break off.

Can't advise on the injection pump, but its expensive enough to get a second opinion.

Labour rates at indies will be half the price.

E300 Td

Hi P.o.D. I am in north notts. thanks for your advice, I have seen a local fuel injection specialist and he also agrees that someone some where is trying to have my trousers off. He spent a good half hour explaining all sorts to me for free just as he was locking up to go home ( the type who just loves to share his knowledge with no strings attatched). Thanks once again.
