First start with the obvious, service history, check the oil is clean. by pulling the dipstick, and wipe the oil on your fingers, wipe it off if it stains your fingers it has been in too long. check intercooler pipes, feel under see if oil is getting past the manifold seals, but not so big a job,
Tell the guy you want to hear it start up from cold, easy to check, put your hand on engine to see if warm , check for oil leaks, engine transmission.

In my opinion this older engine is better than cdi, no common rail etc, check gearbox by diving it hard !

Check the exhaust esp the cat, as dear to replace, also brake discs and pads, all this is common sense, what a lot of folks unfortunately do not have ! good luck Roy

Are you aware of the W210's corrosion issues? Not a problem if it's been sorted properly, but beware of something tarted up to sell quickly. Full verifiable history is a must too.
