I've a 1996 E 300D Estate which has just decided to throw a minor wobbly with the ABS. All seems to work OK but if the speed is increased above about 80mph - on a private road, of course - the ABS warning lamp comes on and won't go off unless the ignition is switched off. It then remains off until the speed goes over 80 mph again.

The only other symptom is a couple of light taps under your foot just as the car comes to a halt, ie at about 1mph, or less. Nothing locks up, though.:(

Have I got a duff wheel speed rotation sensor (or worse) or might I get away with cleaning them up?:(

Either way, any hints and tips/pictures/blogs, etc

Hello and welcome to the forum. I think that the cleaning of the sensors is the first move, they are Hall effect sensors and if too dirty they could fail at speed.

It does not sound like broken cables as this would not be speed related.

Thanks Malcom

I've just picked up another tip that perhaps the teeth on the rear driveshaft rings may be badly graded as well. Time for a closer look:(
