Ok, here we go again!

Went out to car the other day, noticed oily/water gunk on road.
Started car & all sorts of goo came out on road.
Couldn't tell at the time where from? No obvious sign of leak.

I should also say that there is absolutely NO water in the engine oil, no sludge, no gunk or anything.

Looked in Expansion tank only to find 1/4 inch of oil on the top!
Definately engine oil, not gear oil.

Recently had Oil cooler renewed as had the same problem before. Thought it may be head gasket but persuaded to check oil cooler first.
Oil cooler was tested & found to be blowing across plates. (ie, leaking by)
After oil cooler renewed, car was much better; no more white smoke, warmed up temp was steady @ 82 degrees C.

Looked under car this morning only to see a small but steady drip of water from what appears to be the water pump tell tale.

Decided that fault must be oil cooler again? Not installed correctly, so drained all fluids & removed. Press tested & all seems ok, no nips in o-rings ets & they were all renewed recently anyway. (all soft)

After a bit of an exercise - I managed to remove water pump. Tell tale showing dampness so although bearing seems pretty good, seal must be on its way. A new one from a local motor factors is approx £50. Not sure how much oa original Merc one would be. This water pp has a metal impellor, not a plastic one, so I envisage that it has been changed in the past as I have been led to believe that original water pp impellors were plastic.

So i'm back to square one again........................some of the signs seem to be pointing to Cyl head gasket (or even cracked head) but, & its a big BUT, I dont appear to be pressurizing water side & no water getting in engine (oil side)

I should also add that Rad is only 8 months old. Gear oil pipes to gear oil cooler on rad look ok & gear oil is light brown & cleanish.

Something else I have just thought of. Over the past two weeks the engine water temp gg has been a bit erratic sometimes. The temp gg will go up to 85, then all of a sudden it may go wildly up & down for a few minutes before eventually steadying out at 85, or 82 if i'm on the motorway @ 70mph.
I put it down originally to dodgy electrics, maybe some damp that eventually dries out but now I think it may be a symptom of the dodgy water pump, & air getting entrained now & again causing spurious readings? dunno???

Before I embark down the long & lonely road leading to the inevitable cyl head/gasket change; is there anything else I am missing????????????

regards,
Bobi
