Latest MOT uncovered some serious rust in the cross piece of the front sub frame- although it did get a pass. The car has only 65000m and has always been garaged and looked after from new-so very annoying. Apparently it is caused by poor MB design of the engine under covers being fitted too close to this member and trapping water. MB want a crazy £1400 to replace the whole front sub frame. No way is that happening. Discovered online that MB produce a reinforcement plate that can be welded on here thus no need to replace the whole sub frame. This wasn't an option even offered by MB and when I asked if they could fit it they said no'we don't do welding'. Basically not interested.
Anyway I've ordered the plate and will need to find someone who can fit it. Does anyone have any experience of this issue and any advice on how it should be welded/installed?
Thanks

W210’s rust badly unfortunately, I’d also be taking a good luck at the top of the suspension turrets. There’s a good chance they could be held on with little more than the mastic. I’d be checking throughly before making any repairs as it just might not be worth it :(

Looks a fairly straightforward repair depending on the repair panel. The upper part has some material missing which will need to be made good.

As @Blobcat advises, Check the rest of the underneath out too before doing any welding.
My last W210 did me proud but the guy I sold it to found all sorts of rust underneath especially at the rear:confused:

Depending on how long you want to keep the car, weld in new metal or
swap the subframe out (lots on eBay from dry countries for surprisingly little money)

If the car is a keeper replace the entire bit and give it a good protective coating.

tbf its over 20 years old.
