E300TD gearbox problems

Yesterday my E300TD Auto(40 000 miles) decided to stop in the middle of town - engine running normally, but would not select a gear. I had no warning of any problems, it just lost the drive. With the engine running, selecting reverse, Drive , 4,3,2,1 had the same effect as selecting neutral.
I have the car recovered to Mercedes workshop, awaiting outcome - anyone experienced similar problems - IS it electronic or mechanical?

There appears to be no evidence of fluid leaking for transmission. I had driven the car for around 100 miles with out problem earlier in the day.

Any advice / comments/ suggestions welcome.

Fault located to faulty gear selector switch, repair being carried out.

A £60 switch effectively disabled the car but did not show as a fault on the diagnostics!

Is this a common fault?
