i have the a problem with a 1999 Vreg E300turbodiesel, just changed all 6 glow plugs and after i start the engine the glowplug light stays on. It was doing this before i changed them so i had hoped a new set of plugs would have cured it. I have however tested the black connector with 6 pins in, which plugs into the glowplug relay (on the right hand side) with my multi meter and i get no reading on pin 4. is the problem with the glowplug? or the wiring?

Unplug the connector on glow plug 4 and test contiunaty of the wire, if ok the test wire to earth, if no contiunty to earth both ends disconnected then it must be a problem with your new glow plug

Check out the glowplug control unit first, apparantly, there are fusible links inside that can fail and cause the symptoms you have, the links can be repaired.......do a search on these forums for more info.

ive already had the glowplug relay in bits an it is intact inside. i got my multimeter on the big 6 pin connector that plugs into the relay and found that number 4 gave no reading with the ignition on (not with engine running though)

As you still have the same problem even after fitting new plugs i doubt very much that that is where the problem is.....
It would be an idea to test each one of your old plugs to see if any of them were duff, just put a 12v supply to each one in turn, the tip should glow red within seconds if it is good, a bad one will do nothing. If they all prove to be good you will know for sure that the problem lies elsewhere.
Have you checked for continuety of the glowplug leads?

no. need to get the manifold off again to do that. i guess im testing from the same 6 pin connector back to the black clip that fits on the tip of the glowplug? red probe at one end and black probe at the other?

think i just found my problem......got manifold off again and pulled the plug on #4 GP stuck my probe in and earthed it and it gave a reading. then i jiggled the wire and lost the reading and found the cable had fallen out of the clip. so once i get it back together it should be job done.....will let you know......thanks for your replys

B-I-N-G-O!!!!!!!! All sorted so glad i didnt need to take the glow plugs out again...haha. im now hoping that it will start without the misfire on a cold morning now. brakes all done and no longer vibrates through the steering wheel at 60+ mph not suprising as there was nothing on the pads and the discs where so thin compared to the new ones, so im expecting my mpg to go up as they wont be catching as im driving. air filter done, manifold de-gunked and nice and shiny. did fuel and pre fuel last month but gonna do them again next month as ive been on B100 for the last 3-4 months which just leaves the thermostat which is slow to get going but eventually works. if anyone is interested i got 5l of mercedes antifreeze from the stealers for £26.
