I have purchased the damper (looks like a mini shock absorber) to replace mine which is vibrating, very noisy and hot. I undid the top bolt no problem. Although I have managed to undo the bottom bolt I cannot get it out because the washer behind the bolt head is catching on the inside edge of the fan. Anyone any ideas, please? Or does the viscous fan coupling have to come off first? Thanks.

Hi

The easiest thing to do is to remove the pivot arm (item 5 in the attached pic). There is a plastic cover on it and then a 17mm hex underneath the cover, remove this bolt and pull the pivot arm to the side so that the bolt can be removed. Take the tension off the spring prior to this. Also dont get dirt in the hole where the bolt goes as this is direct into the timing case.

Cut 5mm (check that this is correct) off the bolt so that it is easy to remove in the future.

When your putting it all back together grease the pivot arm bushing with some high melting point grease if you have it.

See attached pic for help.

Good luck

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Put a pair of mole grips on the washer, and a spanner on the bolt. You can then screw them apart. The washer is the same size as the thread so you have to screw it down the thread, you can't just push it over it.

You will find that the bolt will rub a little on the pulley but you will be able to get it past ok. It doesn't have to be removed completely, just enough so the bottom eyelet on the shock comes free.

Hi

Try what Parrot says first. Do not be tempted to lever the damper out when you think you have the bolt with drawn nearly enoungh because the lug on the pivot arm can and does break off. And they are £50 and car will be off road till you get a new one. I was that guy!!
