My 1998 E300 Estate (w210) has started to sound like a tube train, a low vibration noise sometimes coming from the front and sometimes the back. It gets louder under breaking but is still there when driving at 30 to 40 mph. My local garage has told me I have a warped passenger side rear disk break but do not know if that is the cause. I have just had 4 new tyres fitted and have replaced the anti roll bar bushes on the front but no change.
Any help would be much appreciated, as I may soon have to stop to pick up passengers!

Thanks for that. The garage have said that the rear disks need replacing before the next mot because of the warped one but did not know if this was the cause of the noise. I have been told by an ex-mercedes mechanic that there is a well known auto gearbox problem on the diesels that is expensive to fix. I was not sure if it could be that. I will have a go at the breaks first I think. Thanks for your help.

I'd start by looking at the prop shaft couplings - big rubber do-nuts at each end of the prop. Check to see if they have spilt or any of the bolts have worked loose
