ive got a 1999 V reg E300 turbodiesel with a sticky tappet. is it a fairly simple job to replace them? im assuming its better to change the whole lot? how many are there? any special tools required? if its best to have the job done by a garage how much roughly do you think it will cost.

thanks in advance.

I had the same problem on my OM 605, it seemed to be just one tappet - I tried using an engine flush and another change of oil but no luck.

The head had to come off for glo plug removal so gave a good opportunity to inspect the hydrallic lifters which were all in very good condition (see below)

Once out its quite difficult to get the oil out from inside, most who do use a vice which forces the oil out of the small hole - I thought this approach to be a bit ham fisted so put them on a hot radiator with lots of news paper underneath, lots of oil flowed out - its important to do this for two reasons, when you take the lifters out they expand if you were to put them straight back in you would have no compression, second, get all that old oil out.

After seeing how small the hole is I would probably switch to 10/40w oil in the winter instead of 15/40 which I use now.

Its a common problem on Mercs and a few people have overcome the problem with a stationary (no load) engine flush using a high % of diesel or ATF fluid mixed in with the regular oil (do not drive it).

If you want to take them out the cams have to come out, but if you mark the chain/cam you can put it back as it came out although the bearing caps have to be unbolted in sequence on turn at a time.
