Hi, I drove my 04 Mercedes E320 CDI through a small river accross the road which was about 12 inches high. It came up to about 2 inches below the body of the car. I was doing about 5 miles per hour and as soon as I hit the water the display said 'Battery Protection' and the car turned off and although there was some power there was not enough to start the car up again. My insurance company have said the car is a total loss but i could buy it back and I wondered whether it would be a good idea to do this? Maybe the water did not go into the air intake valve? What are your thoughts please?

Hello and welcome. The big snag here is thats its all unknown damage and the electrics are complicated on a 211, but at the right price, have a go, it has been written off because of the unknown

What do you mean by '"2 inches below the body of the car"?If you mean 2 inches from the top of the bonnet then walk away now.Insurance companies are not stupid, they know a lost cause when they see one.

I mean 2" from the bottom of the car i.e. below where your feet are when driving. As the battery cut immediately, is there a switch to reset the battery Etc?

Sorry cars are not that simple, they contain many data buses that talk to each other, you have in the order of 20 electronic ECU on that car

OK well thanks for all the help, I think I will take a shot as they want £4,400 and if it does not work out I will probably get more than that from salvage.

Where was the car recovered to?
The reason that I ask is that I doubt that the insurance company will have written of the car without some invetigative work.We had a Bentley Turbo R recovered after flood damage and the insurers looked at the car, asked us to remove the heads & sump (agreed 10hrs labour),sent an assessor around again & then wrote the car off-value of car £11000.
At £4400 you may struggle to recover your money as many of the components are coded to the car,& as such are of no value secondhand.Let's assume the engine & box are ok-these items are generally bombproof so the chances of selling are low.
I think you'll be making a mistake to buy it back.Try to beat them up on their valuation of the car & walk.

I think you are right to buy however it is a gamble, the water may have been blown on to the belt and then drenched the alternator, killing the engine.

I have no under tray under my engine compartment and when I very occasionally hit standing water on the road the above happens, it doesn’t kill the engine but dose kill the alternator, I just knock it into neutral and rev the engine, this quickly gets me back to normal.
