Have been a private owner of E Class Estates for over 25 years now ~ all automatics. Now have a new problem: when starting in the mornings, my E320 is very sluggish; it moves through the gears much too quickly, so that it is already in top when tackling the slight incline just 200 yards away from home. Occasionally same symptoms occur during/after a long motorway run at even speeds. Problem can often be resolved by stopping; turning off; waiting few seconds and then re-starting. Any ideas what this is likely to be???

Could be one of a few things but the fact that it clears after a restart implies its in safe mode. Hence it will have logged a fault which your local mb specialist can read. Probably the maf but best check the codes before spending any money

Probably the MAF?

So before spending a lot of money try inspecting it and cleaning it with contact cleaner spray or even brake cleaner spray (RAC-man tip). It unclips and unplugs from the air inlet pipes. Do not poke solid things into it.
