Hi,

These W211 E320s sure are a dipstick-free zone!

I want to check the transmission oil level of my 2004 E320 CDi (I've got a service dipstick on order).

It seems that a transmission oil and filter change was carried out in July 2008 at 46,275 miles. The MB invoice quotes 'Qty. 5 ref. MA001 989 45 03/10' oil as being used. If 'Qty. 5' equates to 5 x 1.0 litres of oil, then it doesn't seem to be enough. Maybe they are 1.5 litre containers?

The transmission type is listed as: 722626 05 376039 (5-speed automatic gearbox).

Some questions please:

1. How do I remove the red anti-tamper 'lock' from the cap on the transmission filler/dipstick tube? Does it unclip, or do I have to break it (and buy a new one)?

2. How do I check the oil level - is it with the oil at operating temperature (80°C ?), engine running and transmission in neutral (which I read somewhere and can't find now)?

Any other tips?

Thanks,

Razoo

put a glove on and just give it a good yank, that way you can reuse it,

Yes, give it a good run then check it while on tickover!

Yank the whole black cap plus red anti-tamper 'lock' off in one go, or just yank the red anti-tamper 'lock' off and then remove the black cap?

It seems that the transmission oil & filter change carried out by the MB Dealership was only half a job. They didn't drain the torque convertor, which explains why only 5 litres of oil was used. Is this acceptable, or should I have it redone properly, replacing the full 7.5 litres?

Can someone confirm which transmission oil I should be using? My local MB Dealership says that Part No. MA001 989 45 03/10 is wrong for my gearbox (gearbox code is 722626 05 376039). Mind you, the MB Dealership also said I was using the wrong engine oil (Mobile 1 0W40), which I wasn't.

Thanks,

Razoo

Thanks for the info. Am I reading the numbers correctly?

My transmission type is listed as: 722626 05 376039, but I can't see 722626 in the list you posted. It jumps from /618 to /629.

the oil has to be at 80 degrees and the box in park to check the oil, yours being a 2004 car it wont have a drain on the torque convertor so unless you want to pay to have the gearbox removed so the torque convertor can be drained then it cant be done

Do MB have some kind of aversion to dipsticks and drainplugs?

Is a 2/3rds transmission oil-change adequate?

I read somewhere on this forum that it's possible to run the engine for a few seconds to spin the oil out of the torque convertor after the transmission sump has been drained. Is this procedure acceptable for the 722.6XX transmission?

Thanks,

running the engine for a few secs only gets out whats in the cooler in the rad, even having the torque convertor in your hand its still nearly impossible to get out all the old oil

the other downside to running the engine is the gearbox oil pump runs when the engine does so doing it for too long can cause loads of internal damage

I understand from BlackC55 and colechelle that spinning the engine for a few seconds empties the torque converter

Search the forums for how to flush the system by uncoupling the return from the radiator. Piece of cake with a big tray. No need to drop box and easier than fishing for the drain plug.
