Have a w210 with the above problem. Occasionally, after starting (usually though not always when warm) she will run for 10 secs or so, then cut out. It then ALWAYS takes exactly 2 starting cycles before she goes again, and then is find till the next time she does it, which is usually more than a week later.

All serviced up to date, filters changed etc etc - not other problems/faults showing (save for rust around the window frames, but that's another story..)

Any ideas? Thanks all.

Do the ignition lights come back on when the engine dies?
The ignition switch module is known to play up. The tell tale will be that the warning lights do not illuminate when the engine dies as it thinks you've turned off the ignition.

Could possibly be a bit of air creeping in. That could give the problem, As it may run until it hits the air pocket then cut's out then when you crank it of a couple of times it forces the air out!

Just an idea

Good luck

Nope - the ignition stays on the whole time - no cut-out at all.

Air - hmm - where would be the likely place for ingress? Could it be the MAS producing the same reesult?

Thanks all.

I had similar problem. Down to air leaking into the system from the O ring seal on the discharge of lift pump. The seals can be replaced seperately but the plastic fittings go brittle and break when you try to remove them. I renewed all 3 fuel lines, cost ca £40. You need small hands to fit the one under the HP pump!! Also check the electric stop valve. I have renewed mine twice as the plastic end has split. Be careful of the piece of plastic pipe that connects this valve to HP pump as there are seals either end. Cheap to renew

Just a follow-up.

This problem got worse and worse - the car stalled everytime when cold, and would take and age to "fire" again. When warm, the engine revs would dip just after start, and very nearly stall. Things were generally lumpy. Came to a head when it flatted the battery failing to start.

So, before parting with hard-earned, I had a clean-up yesterday.

Extracted the MAS, and cleaned it with isoprop spray, and cleaned out the pipework to and from, as well as the area in which it sits. A lot of grease and grime came out.

Result? Result! Now starts spot-on and runs smooth as butter. So far - only did it yesterday.

Well, guess what - didn't fix it. Lasted for about a week, then back to square one. Does it with MAS connected or disconnected. Cleaned it again, just changes the fault a little but not really different.

Has now settled into pattern. Starts first time - runs 8-10 secs, then stalls. The won't start at all unless you crank for 10+ secs, then she goes and runs fine.

If you run it in the morning, starts fine in the evening, no probs. Leave overnight - back to square one.

I have checked over all the pipes as above, but to no avail.

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds very much like an airlock. Fuel beyond the bubble so starts, use that up and she stalls, then crank through until she fires again. Takes a few hours to suck the air back in so only re-occurs overnight ...
I'd be checking pipes and seals again.

Thanks - does sound logical.

Can anyone, reading the posts on the prvious page, give me an idea of likely trouble spots by reference to what they are near/under - or with a picture to really Rolls-Royce it (can I say that here?) - I'm a competent home mechanic type chappie, but it's my first merc diesel and I don't have any form of manual beyond what comes with the new car?

Very much appreciated.

P.S. or point me at a downloadable manual I guess??

attached courtesy of PoD/Television courtesy of russian website (think). Now I am no font of knowledge but had a similar problem (what a pain and how emabarressing - wouldn't mind if it had a Fiat badge).

Mine was also a 320cdi. the pipe that went on mine was no. 29 and cost <£20 from mercs. There are better qualified people than me to comment on this well written topic, my rec is to check the pipes for diesel leaks, if not obvious slide down the corrugated pipe covering, as mine had cracked mid point and were not leaking at the joins where you (me at least) would normally expect.
