On my 2001 E320 Cdi the glowplug lamp goes out when ready to start the engine, but when the engine starts (always first time) the warning lamp comes back on and stays on for about 30-45 secoonds.

Engine runs well, sweet as a nut.

Any ideas? Is the plug still heating or is it a faulty sensor of some sort?

many thanks
Mike

Sounds like you may have a glow plug on its way out....they can get a bit tetchy after 60,000 miles

Not that scary! - £12 ea from Eurocarparts

But can be a bit of a B**ch to get out if they have seized in the head....hopefully on your newer model this will not be the case, which was not the case on mine

Not too bad to change, but make sure the engine is red hot before you attempt to unscrew them otherwise they may shear off. It also sometimes helps if you pour cold water directly on the plug before loosening it, which momenterily shrinks it. Dont forget to blow the water out with an air line before you remove the plug or it will run into the cylinder.
Just changed all the plugs on my 2000 E320 CDI without a problem.

Same here, its a sign of dodgy glow plug. Best to replace them all, expensive but worth it.

THE REASON THE LAMP STAYS ON FOR 30 SECONDS IS TO WARM UP THE DIESEL SYSTEM PROPERLY THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR GLOW PLUGS THERES A SECTION ON IT IN YOUR DRIVERS MANUAL HOPE THIS HELPS

Swerve - disagree - this is after light has gone out and engine started.

All glowplugs on my ML270 changed at 90,000. Less taxi smoke in the mornings.

Glowplug light system works by staying on or coming on after starting to warn of a failed glowplug. Mine were replaced at 65k, now at 100k and second set still fine. Don't bother trying to do one, do them all.
