E320 CDI Tapping noise from front suspension

Hi there, Pls help. Bought an E class 320 CDI, 2001 model with 85k on the clock, only had it 2 weeks, now notice a slight knocking/tapping noise when going over rough ground?? Had an Audi A6 before, had a simliar problem witht that, tuned out to be the top wishbone ball joints.

Does an E320 have a similar suspension set up, could it be ball joints??

i'd look at anti roll bar drop links 1st....

then lower ball joints....
then broken springs....

Anti roll bar links will tap/clunk
Ball joint will creak
Broken spring will drop car lower

Almost certain its your anti roll bar links and bushes.

The audi suspension setup is very diferent, it uses a split lower arm and an upper arm, the merc has a single lower arm and a shock absorber strut.
Both have an anti roll bar linking the front wheels.

Just to cheer you up the drop links only last 25-50k but they are very cheap and easy to fit.!!

Hi there, Checked the anti roll bar links, think they have been changed before, the top ball joints i think are to blame, O/S ball joint, the rubber boot is broken.

How are these replaced?? looks like the ball joint is connected to a sort of of top wishbone assembly???
