I seem to have a variety of problems which may be connected to the cold weather and to each other!!

On starting from cold, the starter motor takes several seconds to start engine and sometimes sounds like its having 2 attempts. A cloud of white smoke comes out of the exhaust.

Once running, the engine temp rarely exceeds 70/75 - whether on motorway or urban driving.

Then, on turning the engine off, there is a noise which souds like a jet engine turning off from front of engine bay (driver's side) which lasts for about 5-10 seconds. This is followed for the next 1-2 minutes by a quieter, higher-pitched noise which sounds like a small fan - from same place as jet engine noise.

Any thoughts/suggestions before I head off to MB?

Reckon on fuel leak/ injector leaking for the starting problem and the whine is the diesel heater that runs for a few mins after the car is switched off (under the drivers side wing from memory.

Try John Griffiths in Caversham, Reading www.jgriffiths.co.uk, which is where I go, and Star Motors (nearby) have also had a good write up.

They are both good and they will not break the bank, you do have an odd fault, and very hard to diagnose

Would the diesel heater account for both noises after switching off?

Thanks Richard. I'll just put up with the funny looks I get if I switch off in a crowded place!!

I often switch off in a crowded place, normally when Mrs E has dragged me shopping!

Make sure you get the starting prob seen to asap as if it is a leaking injector, these only get worse over time.

The starting problem is probably the seals in the diesel pump, its right at the front of the car. They only cost £3 for four. Mine had the same problem, worse in the cold.
