Hi All
Have an E320 CDI Tip, 52 which has started to "hang on" in gear and not change down as it should, also no kick down. Shifts through all gears (in its own time !) and wont rev over 3000 rpm, also when stationary seems to "nudge down" into first, even in W, no different in S or W, cruise and limit are fine, problem comes and goes.

Also, may not be relevant but i had ABS and ESP warning lights come up under breaking after a run, tuned off & on and all was well, some weeks later same again from cold, same deal off - on and all has (so far) remained well.

Any thoughts?

I would say it was the MAF that needs replacing, you could unplug it and see if it runs better, may be lumpy, but should rev up more

The battery if original may be giving low volts also a reason for both faults

E320 CDI Kickdown

HI malcolm,

Please could you shed some light on my e320 cdi 2005, It drives ok, no lights on dash, but won't rev over 3000 on kickdown when floored.
Have cleaned the maf but no difference.
Will buying a new maf fix this problem.

Thanks

A short test might be a cheaper way to start, far more common probs with your age/model other than a maf......

You could try it with it unplugged to see, it might prove the point,,it is not an expensive one for your car

Actually Malcolm, these Bosch ones are quite pricey!

As Colin says, the MAF sensors are not a common fail on these engines, it really needs plugging in next...

Thanks for the replies guys,

When you say plug it in do you mean STAR?

And also Malcolm, when you say unplug maf, when i do this, if the maf is faulty will it rev past 3000?

Thanks again.

If its a Bosch MAF then expensive at £160 from a Bosch service center

Do not bother revving in N, just unplug it and take a test drive''

I thought it was a Perrieburg in this one

Malcolm,

Yes it is a Bosch, i think it ends in 0048?
There is one at a local garage, i have arranged it with them to swap and test and see if it is the MAF.
Also i have noticed that it does rev over 3000 when i select the C/S button and select C !! Is it still likely to be the MAF?

Regards.

The car has to be driven as a no load test means nothing

MB take £265 for the MAF

It was never likely to be the MAF sensor, as we say, these do not often fail and I have only ever replaced on of these type.

Yes, by plugging it in I meant having proper analysis done, and STAR is ideal.

Alex,

Will star tell what the malfunction is, even though there is no CEL on display?

Thanks

You do not always get a CEL on the dash when a fault has been logged, only certain fault scenarios put the CEL on.

If you have RPM limited to 3,000 then there will be a fault code to go with it, possibly in engine management, possibly the relevent code will be in transmission - but it will be there.
Also note, fault codes are not diagnosis, but a starting point for diagnosis.
