E320 intermitent starting

Hi,
I'm brand new to this forum and in need of some help, my 2000 E320 petrol auto starts when it feels like it !!!
It has an 'intelligent' starting system. When I turn the ignition key the engine/starter motor just clicks as if the battery is flat (which it isn't). On continued trying it suddenly fires into life. The problem is totally random.

A bad earth in the starting circuitry could cause this.
