Hi Everyone,

I've just had my E serviced and asked the dealership to look into a "knock" that has been developing over the past year. Rant on: I went to another dealership while the car was under the pre-loved warranty, but it was difficult to replicate and I was put off by the implication that it might not be covered and would be costly to investigate - on a cat I paid £20K for 9 months previously! Sheesh!). Rant off.

Suffice to say that the problem was the upper swivel joints on both sides and both need replacing. I am covered by Warranty Direct for a multitude of brake parts including bushes and wishbones etc, but upper swivel joints and ball joints aren't listed. Looks like I might be footing this bill. Does anyone have any ideas how much labour time I would need to allow for this job? I was told around 3 hours and £250 or so for parts.

I have ordered the parts from the main dealer but am considering taking the work to a local independent near Bath. If anyone knows of any other reputable Merc specialists near Swindon, I'd be grateful for a steer!! I also need new front pads (and disks, too) in the next couple of thousand miles as well, and am asking the independant for a quote - around £230 including VAT.

I love my E, but with a new MAS, exhaust back box, balljoints and brakes, it's been a bit of an expensive year to be in the MB owners' club! And that doesn't include the two new front wings and door repairs under warranty for corrosion.

Your thoughts gratefully received.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks very much for the contacts. I have spoken with Tony about replacing my brakes when the time comes and he has given a very reasonable estimate. A happy ending to *this* saga as Warranty Direct covered the swivel joint assemblies (just not ball joints on their own).

.....And Merc sent me a customer service questionnaire after this last lot of work that led to a 20 min phone call (and much sympathy) following up my comments. The new models are all sorted in the corrosion, bits falling off/failing and electrics snags departments, but, sadly, as my car has depreciated at over £5K per year (not bad for year 4 and 5 of depreciation - NOT!), I can't afford one! ¦;0)

LOL
